Frequently Asked Questions

Joining the Club

Updated 29 Aug 2002 16:29 by Dave Tran

Q: Do I have to have a partner to sign up for the club?

A: No. A "partner" is never necessary to sign up. Usually people will sign up alone or they'll bring friends for "emotional support". In any case, you'll never be dancing with the same person all night (unless you want to) because you'll always meet new people there! It is an advantage for some to have a few regular partners to dance with but you should try dancing with everybody. There's so much you can learn from dancing with someone you've never danced with before.

Q: Is previous experience required to join?

A: No. If you want to learn how to dance, we'll teach you during a pre-dance lesson at 8pm. Even if you want to just hang with the DJ and listen to music, that's fine, too!

Q: Where do I go to get a club membership?

A: Memberships are always available at the dance for $10 (Queen's students) and $12 (non-students). To see where and when the next dance is, check the events calendar.

Dance Lessons

Updated 29 Aug 2002 16:35 by Dave Tran

Q: Are there any lessons I can take to get started?

A: There are free lessons before our weekly dances. They start at the beginning of each dance, usually 8:00pm. They will last about an hour and are worth taking repeatedly. Every week the lesson has a different focus for swing basics.

Q: Are there more advanced lessons on other nights as well?

A: Currently there are a few Swing Club members that are organizing dance classes for Fall 2002. They will be teaching Lindy Hop basics as well as intermediate material.

Dancing

Q: Do you guys do West Coast Swing, or East Coast Swing?

A: We do Lindy Hop, the dance that started it all. Although it is older that both "coasts" of the more modern swing dance styles, many of us beleive that it is the coolest, most free-form and artistic swing dance style today. Lindy Hop is constantly evolving and no two people do it alike. You're always welcome to dance any way you like at the club; we can teach you Lindy Hop and you can teach us what you know.

Music

Q: When are you going to post your plsylists for the dances?

A: When we finally have time. We normally don't play stuff from playlists; usually we play on the fly and it always depends on the "vibe" at that moment. If you want to know more about a certain song or style of music, ask the DJ!
